Ship Recycling - The Hongkong Convention
Description
This course will help participants gain in-depth
knowledge regarding the Hong Kong
Convention in the context of the Ship Scrapping Industry, with
a focus on the strategic position of India in ship recycling. India has emerged
as one of the largest hubs for ship recycling and it is imperative that all
stakeholders become well conversant with the international regulations
governing this industry.
The Hong Kong Convention, Development and
Maintenance Inventory of Hazardous Materials on board the Ships with over 500
GT. This inventory will be useful in identifying the quantity and location of
hazardous materials on board a ship and thus facilitating safe handling and
disposal practices. Hong Kong Convention, List and Preparation of Dangerous
Goods for Ships Over 500 Tons (GT). These inventories help identify the type
and quantity of hazardous materials on board the ship, as well as their
handling and disposal properly. Secondly, the Convention provides that ship
recycling may be undertaken only in facilities authorized by the competent
authority. This is clearly a requirement that underlines the need for high
environmental and safety standards right from the beginning of the recycling
process.
