Offshore Familiarisation Course (OFC)

Description

The Offshore Familiarisation Course is designed to enhance the knowledge of seafarers who wish to join an offshore fleet and may also be useful to offshore workers looking to change their specialization. The course covers a range of topics related to offshore oil and gas operations, which often involve drilling and retrieving oil under extreme pressures.

To put it into perspective, for every 33 feet of descent, the pressure increases by 14.5 psi, making deepwater operations extremely dangerous due to the high pressure, low temperature, and poor visibility. In addition, offshore firms incur high costs due to the need for technologies that can work in extreme environments.

Offshore drilling and production platforms are like living on a knife-edge, with the crew often working under extreme weather conditions. Technicians must continuously monitor the installation and all systems above and below water to ensure safe and smooth operation.

The variability in ocean current strength, direction, and vertical shear, as well as wave height and periodicity, applies significant loads on all materials, increasing fatigue on the medium and long term. Therefore, a continuously improved understanding of ocean conditions and variability is critical to the development of sustainable, safe, and reliable offshore materials and operations
